Who We Are

The Edinburgh Medieval Pigment Project (EMPP) is a collaborative project between History of Art at the Edinburgh College of Art and the Late Antique and Medieval Postgraduate Society (LAMPS).

We hope to:

  • Increase the understanding of the way pigments were cultivated in the Middle Ages.
  • Provide interested students with the opportunity to cultivate a variety of plants.
  • Experiment with making pigments once the plants reach maturity.
  • Use our homemade pigments in a variety of mediums.

Current pigment-yielding plants in the garden are: madder, indigo, woad, and weld.

Community outreach projects are in development, and we hope to launch them in Spring 2017. Stay tuned!
